Evaluation of medicinal plants used in the preparation of bottles in Santo Antônio de Jesus - BA

Abstract

The demand for medicinal bottles has grown gradually, due to their guarantee of curing various types of diseases, however, they are marketed without registration and without quality control. Therefore, the objective of this study was to carry out an ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used in the preparation of bottles, sold in Santo Antônio de Jesus-Bahia, Brazil. As well as verifying which solvent and tissue-organ of the plant are used in the preparations of the bottles and comparing the pharmacological property of each plant mentioned corresponds to that described in the literature. The 20 samples of medicinal bottles were obtained in commercial establishments, 10 in the rural area and 10 in the urban area of the municipality of Santo Antônio de Jesus. In the urban area, the most cited species in the preparation of the bottles were: Cambui (Myrciaria tenella), Fennel (Pimpinella anisum), Jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril) and Milome (Aristolochia triangularis). In rural areas, the species Jatobá and Milome were found. When comparing with the literature, all species are reported to have some therapeutic properties. However, according to its popular indication, most of the plants used were not proven for this purpose, making this study of paramount importance for communities to enable the safe use of these preparations for medicinal purposes.
