Abstract

Pets develop a relationship with human beings and can help people in cognitive and emotional
aspects, contributing in different areas such as health and education. The objective of this work
is to understand the perception of undergraduates at the State University of Southwest Bahia,
Campus Vitória da Conquista, Bahia on the participation and contribution of pets in the teaching
and learning process. 73 questionnaires were applied face-to-face to undergraduate students in
Biological Sciences, History and Languages courses. Most students consider that their
graduation establishes a relationship between education and health, and believe that animals
contribute in a beneficial way to those who live together. The majority approve the participation
of animals to contribute to the learning of their students, if they were teachers, which may help
to raise awareness of different topics, as well as being included in the curriculum as a crosscutting theme. It was evident in this work that education and health are themes that complement each other for most university students surveyed, however we emphasize that the university can
and should contribute to the insertion of themes in the health and education sphere, as well as
stimulating and training professionals to act in different environments.
